The cowboy way of life is more than just an image—it's a philosophy strongly rooted in values that resonate deeply with us! At Skyline Guest Ranch, we are fortunate to have individuals who not only embody the cowboy spirit but also articulate it beautifully. We are excited to share an excerpt from Colter's writing, a heartfelt reflection on what it means to be a cowboy—highlighting the values of hard work, integrity, and resilience that define this timeless lifestyle.
The Cowboy Way By Colter Morris
Since the beginning of time, a breed of people has been made different from the rest- the cowboy. When I say cowboy I'm not referring to pearl snap shirts or big gold buckles but a way of life that embodies hard work, integrity, resilience, and respect. They wake up before the sun rises and work with all their strength and will till the work is done. It is honesty towards your fellow men and to oneself. It is being scared to hop on but still swinging that leg over. It is the perfect mix of resilience and stubbornness to keep trying when it gets hard or doesn't work.
The cowboy way is hard work and perseverance. Cowboys understand the satisfaction that comes from a day's labor, the feeling of accomplishment at a job well done. Unlike other ways of life that prioritize convenience or instant gratification, the cowboy way embraces the challenges of hard work, grit, and determination. Cowboys know that success is not handed to them but earned through dedication and a willingness to face adversity head-on. The cowboy way fosters a deep connection to the land. Cowboys have a special understanding of the rhythms of nature, the changing seasons, the shifting winds, the falling rain. They respect the land, a sacred trust, recognizing their role as stewards over it, They are tasked with preserving the land for future generations. This connection to the land instills a sense of humility and an undeniable reverence. I am reminded of this as I ride into the alpine country or peer out over endless valleys of wildflowers and roaming bison.
The cowboy understands the value of teamwork and cooperation, recognizing that no individual can find lasting success alone. Whether it's lending a helping hand to a neighbor in need or coming together to tackle a common challenge, cowboys exemplify the spirit of community and mutual support. In contrast to other ways of life that may foster individualism or competition, the Cowboy Way fosters bonds of friendship and unity that endure through hardship.Â
In a world characterized by complexity and uncertainty, the cowboy way offers a guiding light, a timeless philosophy that celebrates the enduring virtues of simplicity, honor, and resilience. As we navigate the challenges of modern life, may we draw inspiration from the cowboy way. May we stand taller, work harder, and pull together.
