RIDING IN YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

Few experiences compare to that of horseback riding in the backcountry wilderness of Yellowstone National Park. Skyline Guest Ranch offers private tours into the most remote and visually spectacular locations in the park. Escape the crowds for an experience that truly encapsulates the beauty of Yellowstone. This is a great way to see wildlife in its natural setting, view breathtaking vistas, and relax in nature. This trip is perfect for photographers or anyone wanting an immersive Yellowstone experience.

Riding Locations

Skyline offers full-day horseback riding experiences in countless locations on the northeast side of Yellowstone National Park. Each location is unique and offers a different riding and sightseeing experience. The following is a list of some of our favorite places:

  • The Lamar Valley- Often called “America’s Serengeti,” Lamar Valley is one of Yellowstone’s most famous wildlife-viewing destinations. Ride through vast open grasslands where herds of bison roam freely, pronghorn antelope graze, and the call of coyotes echoes in the distance. This area is also prime territory for spotting wolves, bears, badgers, and other iconic Yellowstone wildlife, offering an unparalleled backcountry experience for nature lovers and photographers alike.

  • Specimen Ridge, Grand Canyon of Yellowstone- This is our most adventurous and breathtaking ride in Yellowstone National Park. Climb to 8,500 feet along Specimen Ridge, where sweeping views of the Lamar Valley stretch beneath you. From this elevated vantage point, take in a bird’s-eye view of the Yellowstone River carving through the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone—a sight few get to experience on horseback. With rugged terrain, soaring vistas, and opportunities to see elk, bighorn sheep, and other wildlife, this ride is perfect for thrill-seekers and those craving an unforgettable backcountry journey.

  • Stairway to Heaven, Pebble Creek Valley- This ride takes you on a stunning ascent over Barronette Peak’s switchbacks, rewarding you with panoramic views of untouched wilderness. Once over the pass, you’ll descend into Pebble Creek Valley, a hidden paradise of wildflower-filled meadows framed by towering peaks like Wolverine, Abiathar, and Cutoff Mountain. The quiet beauty of this valley makes it a prime location for spotting moose, as they graze among the willow-lined creeks. This ride is a peaceful escape into the wild, perfect for those looking to experience Yellowstone’s solitude and splendor.
